Byrd Scholarships
The federally funded Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship program provides scholarships to academically talented high school seniors and GED recipients who show promise of continued excellence in postsecondary education. The scholarship provides up to $1500 per year for a total of four years contingent upon federal funding. The application deadline for GED recipients is June 30, 2006, but it is not too early for GED graduates with total scores of 2700 and above to begin applying. Information on the program and application criteria is available at Byrd Scholarships. To date, more than 1,050 GED graduates are eligible to apply. Application deadline for GED graduates is June 30, 2006.
Education at Work
The Education Cabinet is now accepting applications for its annual Education at Work Scholarship program. The scholarship amount has been increased to $1,000 each, up from $500 in past years. are attached below. Please print and make the letter from Secretary Virginia G. Fox, application/guidelines, and flyer information available to your clients/customers ASAP. (Please print flyer on color printer if accessible.) The deadline for applications is April 28, 2006. Louisville Technical Institute
Louisville Technical Institute offers $1,800 scholarships for GED students who would have graduated in 2005 or before. Students interested in one of three scholarships available every quarter should contact an adult admissions representative at (800) 844-6528.
GEDTS Turner Award
Each year the GED Testing Service recognizes a GED graduate who has made significant contributions to their community, state or nation. Last year, Kentucky had two outstanding nominees in Dr. Robert Felner, chairman, University of Louisville’s Department of Education, and Dr. Leah Cobb, medical resident specializing in child and adolescent psychiatry. National award winners have included a governor, television commentator, youth worker and community college president.
