Improving the Skills of Kentucky's Workforce

In FY 2005, Kentucky Adult Education (KYAE) provided workforce education services to more than 51,000 employees in approximately 1,000 companies. Training programs extend to all categories of business and industry including manufacturing, healthcare, hospitality, retail and distribution.

Developing the skills of Kentucky's workforce is one of Kentucky Adult Education's (KYAE) priorities and is accomplished by improving the skills of employees through workforce education services. KYAE is constantly reaching out in creative ways to make it as easy as possible for employers to empower their workforce with knowledge.

Employee Onsite Training Opportunities

Workplace essential skills training is delivered at a time and location most convenient for employees and employers. Training can improve performance, productivity and profitability.  These workforce education services provides training in the following areas:

Please Note:  KYAE can provide online learning opportunities onsite at businesses. Current and prospective employees can improve their basic reading, math, team-building and communication skills – as well as GED preparedness.

Employee Distance Learning Opportunities

KYVAE online learning LoginKentucky Virtual Adult Education (External link icon--indicates visitor is leaving the kyae.gov site and entering an external site.) web portal provides adult students and instructors with 24/7 access to curriculum, information, resources and services in a user-friendly format.  This site is dedicated to helping adult learners achieve their personal learning goals, which include skills improvement, grade level goals and/or completion of the GED. 

Adults can study for the GED, take a practice test, enhance their job skills or improve their English with access to a computer, the Internet and e-mail--allows employees to learn anywhere, anytime, at their convenience.

Other Workforce Education Services
  • A number of incentives were created to encourage more adults to get a GED.  Employers can earn a state income tax credit and employees who earn a GED can receive a tuition discount for up to four semesters at one of Kentucky's public colleges or universities.
  • KYAE's adult education adult education centers provide competency-based instruction and certifications to prepare adults to take the ACT WorkKeys assessment for the Kentucky Employability Certificate (KEC) (36K DOC). The KEC is a standardized credential that validates/matches reading, math and locating information skills of workers with the skills required for specific occupations. 
  • KYAE programs also provide instruction for the Kentucky Manufacturing Skills Standards (26K DOC) assessment, which is based on the academic, employability and occupational skills identified by industry as necessary for employment in the manufacturing sector.
  • SkillMobiles, two state-of-the-art computer mobile labs that feature a comprehensive selection of online curriculum, desktops, flat panel displays, printers and wireless Internet access are available for employer and employee convenience. To schedule the use of a mobile unit, please contact Jim Thompson at 800/928-7323; 573-5114, ext. 112--Frankfort area; or email him at jim.thompson@ky.gov.
  • If employees would rather have face-to-face instruction, KYAE funds adult education centers in all 120 counties where employees can meet an instructor and work on a learning plan geared toward their skills upgrade.

Verifying a GED
 

KYAE does not verify an employee's or potential employee's GED status by phone, fax, or e-mail. A request signed by the employee or a request with a release of information consent form must be submitted. The process and the request form are available here.
